  • Structural Fire Design | Shepherd Gilmour

< Back Structural Fire Design Rate £70/hr Contact Us Now About Fire design of structures ensures their safe predictable performance in the event of a foreseeable fire scenario. The level of fire design depends upon a number of factors and is often determined by carrying out a fire risk assessment. Typically, requirements are set out according to Eurocode with respect to time. Based on the requirements, a structural engineers first job is to determine the most suitable material and appropriate methods of fire protection to critical elements. The design is then undertaken according to the relevant parts of either EC2, 6 or 9. In the past, fire design was not always considered and this has resulted in terrible consequences such as the great fire of London in 1666 which resulted in the avoidable destruction of over 132,000 homes. More recently, examples of how serious the threat of fire can be to a building and its occupants are the Bradford City Stadium fire of 1985, the collapse of The World Trade Center Twin Towers in 2001 and Grenfell Tower in 2017. • Pettypool Activity Centre | Shepherd Gilmour

< Back Pettypool Activity Centre £1.04m Activity Centre in Cheshire. The existing Girlguiding Activity Centre in Cheshire Forest was a “hotchpotch” of prefabricated structures, joined together in an impractical way over several years of expansion which ultimately resulted in a premises which was increasingly becoming inaccessible and not fit for purpose. As a result, the Pettypool committee for Girlguiding Cheshire Forest required a new building to replace the original prefab structures, with key emphasis being accessibility, inclusivity and sustainability with an appearance which would seamlessly fit into the surrounding natural environment. Walker Simpson Architects were appointed as the principle designer, with SGL appointed as the leading structural designers for the project. Together with the M&E consultants A&P Dynamic Design, we were able to provide a new activity centre on time and on budget. The design was situated on sloping ground and incorporated two main wings which enclose a central courtyard. A terrace extends outwards, cantilevering over the bank towards the lower level of the site. The building was required to exhibit a large open plan space for activities, for which a steelwork portal frame structure was employed. The structure was clad in timber and steel, with highly recyclable products in use throughout, such as the Hunter Douglas Heartfelt system which also gave a unique and fitting aesthetic to the ceilings within the building. • Structural Surveys | Shepherd Gilmour

< Back Structural Surveys Rate £120/hr Contact Us Now About Overview Structural Surveys are carried out to determine the condition of a structure and whether any visual defects are present. All engineers at SGL are experienced and qualified to carry out structural surveys and several of our senior engineers are also chartered in at least one relevant area. We routinely carry out Structural Surveys for domestic clients either directly or via their insurers. We can provide domestic surveys to assist with purchases, sales, insurance claims or just for peace of mind. All of our reports are hand crafted and word processed by a qualified appointed engineer. We endeavour to provide a detailed and meaningful service and do not issue automatically generated reports of little use or relevance. The Process Upon appointing SGL to carry out a Structural Survey, one of our administration team would arrange a site visit with one of our qualified engineers at a time which suits you. The engineer would visit the property and carry out a visual survey, both externally and internally subject to access. General information and the condition of the property would be recorded during the survey and any defects noted. The engineer would then discuss these with the client and inform the client of their possible next steps based on the likely outcome of the survey. The engineer would then hand craft the report highlighting the condition of the property, any deflects found and provide comments and conclusions on whether the defects are likely serious & what we would recommend moving forward to stabilise the property if any serious defects are found. In addition to domestic surveys, SGL also provide a service to the commercial sector. To find out if we could help you, please drop us a line on the Contact Us page or by telephone or email, available at the bottom of this page. Project Gallery Previous Next
